Arx
by Henrik (17/05/11)
Close to the gigantic "statue" Nimis there is another art piece by the same artist, Lars Vilks. He made it in 1991 and named it Arx (latin for fortress). It looks like a melted ruin and you could make the assumption that it is a sculpture. But it's actually a book with is own ISBN-number and all (91-88248-47-X). Instead of pages made from paper, the artist used stones. That's why every stone has a number on.

An abacus art piece
by Henrik (21/12/10)
A piece of art that I found outside an office building. I liked it but know nothing about it. I looked for information that would tell me the name or creator of the art piece around it, but couldn't find any. So I'm going to call it the "abacus art piece" until I learn what it is really called.

Nimis
by Henrik (27/11/10)

This post features 38 pictures on the biggest piece of art I have photographed so far. It is called Nimis (Latin for "too much") and can be found on a beach in Kullaberg nature reserve. It's built out of wood and it's estimated to weight about 70 tons. The history behind this work is long and I'll only give a brief retelling of it here. The construction of it was started in 1980 by the artist Lars Vilks. He didn't bother to obtain any permission from the local government to build it so once they found out about it, they started the legal work to get it removed. But after a lot of legal filibustering by the people that want to preserve the work, they seems to have given up on the idea. The work is still being worked on by various people and parts of the construction has been rebuilt during the years because of damage dealt to it by storms and arsonists. All my pictures were shoot on the same summer day this year.
Hertig Knut (Duke Knut)
by Henrik (07/06/10)
Four meter up on the corner of a house in central Halmstad stands a statue of Duke Knut. It was made in 1985 by local sculptor, painter and printmaker Walter Bengtsson. "Duke Knut" is a real historic knight. His full name is Knut Porse and he was the Duke of Halland during the 14th century. It is said that he's the one that gave Halmstad its name.

Cyklisterna (The bicyclists)
by Henrik (06/04/10)
Close to the center of Halmstad there is a display of four yellow bicyclist. They are well known, because the have been since 1999 standing right next to one of the major roads in Halmstad. The statues were made by a locally born artist named Annika Simonsson. She was born in Halmstad 1969 and is currently residing in Oslo, Norway's capital. As far as I can tell the statues are mostly made of fibre-glass and a few pieces of steel for the spokes.

Sand crocodiles
by Henrik (27/01/10)
I starting to really miss the summer and its warmth, so I'm posting this summer picture. It's two crocodiles made out of sand that I found on the local beach.

I took the picture on the same evening as another summer photo.
Tunnel graffiti
by Henrik (16/01/10)

This is what I assume to be a random piece of graffiti without any real meaning. I photographed it because its simple and abstract design appeals to me on some level.
The tunnel with a constellation of blue lights
by Henrik (23/12/09)
This is a tunnel in Halmstad that looks quite ordinary during the day.

But during the night, it has a constellation of blue lights glowing from one of its walls.

I never noticed the tunnel had holes in the wall during the day. I would just pass it by quickly on my bicycle. So when I then one dark evening went through the tunnel, I was really surprised to see the blue lights. Since then I have wondered if the lights always were there or if they were added later. I don't think the light pattern fits the mosaic on the wall, so that makes me think they were added later by somebody else. Somebody that wanted to make their own mark on the wall, a sort of light graffiti if you will. But the major flaw in that idea would be how did they put in the electric cables in place without destroying the whole wall?
Happy Ghosts
by Henrik (22/11/09)
Somebody has spray painted (what I assume is) two happy ghosts on an electrical cabinet. I think they are cute, so I had to photograph them. The cabinet is place in the middle of the town, but I don't think many have seen the painting because it's facing away from the major streets it's close by. I only saw it because I like to walk around all over and look for photo opportunities.

The same photo, only cut differently.

This photograph was taken long after I found the painting. I wanted to wait until I had the time to photograph it while it was dark outside. I think I did the right choice. This photo was taken with a 13 seconds exposure time and it turned out great. I like the lightning and the colors.
"Flicka i balja" (A girl in a tub)
by Henrik (22/10/09)

This is one of the newest pieces of public art in Halmstad. It is a bronze sculpture made by Swedish artist Lena Cronqvist. I believe it was added to the city late May this year. I have tried to find a good article about Lena Cronqvist, but only found small pieces of information. The information I have gathered is that she is mostly know for her paintings depicting family drama, vulnerability and alienation. She was born in 1938, has a life long artist grant from the Swedish government and is currently spending a lot of her time in Thailand. With a guaranteed income from the Swedish government, I can understand why she is spending her time in Thailand. You can live a very comfortable life there. But I have read that that probably isn't the only reason for her staying there. There is a foundry outside of Bangkok where she can cast bronze sculptures. I do not definitely know that this sculpture was made in Thailand, but I would like to think so.
Banana
by Henrik (21/10/09)

I like this piece of graffiti because of its simplicity. Just a few quick strokes and BAM! Banana!
"Hairy" bicycle
by Henrik (09/08/09)
Early this week I saw a strange looking bicycle. I'm guessing that somebody had drag out an old bicycle from the river and decided to placed it close to the intersection where I found it. I can't understand why anybody would go through the trouble of dragging out the bike and then carry it away. I can only imagine that they might wanted to produce a piece of public art or that they were really really drunk (or maybe both).

The "hair" on the bicycle are many small pieces of underwater vegetation. I wonder how long it took for the bike to gain all this "hair".
Railroad crossing light face
by Henrik (27/06/09)
A photo on a railroad crossing light close to my apartment. Somebody has put a sticker on it and created a weird face. I don't know if the effect was intentional. The sticker had probably something written on it and it might have been put up to promote something rather than for artistic effect. Or maybe both.

Pixel Bear
by Henrik (13 December 2008)
Apparently I’m not the only one playing around with pearl tablets. I found this Bear from the NES Ice Climber game stuck on a traffic sign not far from where I live.
